Preparing to Leave for Army Basic Training

Basic Combat Training is a structured ten-week introduction for enlisted Soldiers. The final preparation instructions must come from your recruiter and training orders.

01

Follow the official packing list

  • Use the current list supplied by the recruiter or official training guidance
  • Bring only authorized documents, clothing, hygiene items, and personal items
  • Do not assume a list found on social media is current
  • Label or organize items only as instructed
02

Organize personal administration

  • Confirm travel, reporting, and emergency-contact details
  • Arrange recurring bills and lawful financial responsibilities
  • Make copies of important documents when appropriate
  • Discuss communication expectations with family
  • Resolve avoidable legal, school, employment, housing, or transportation issues before departure
03

Prepare physically without a last-minute spike

Continue gradual training and recovery. Avoid suddenly doubling running, adding unfamiliar heavy lifting, or using unsafe crash weight-loss methods before departure.

  • Maintain consistent sleep and hydration habits
  • Practice running, strength, trunk endurance, and general movement gradually
  • Use recovery days
  • Stop and seek qualified help for pain, dizziness, or unusual symptoms
04

Prepare for a structured environment

Official Army information describes four phases across ten weeks. Expect early mornings, physical training, instruction, teamwork, field exercises, and limited personal control over the daily schedule. Ask your recruiter about current communication, pay, travel, and family-contact expectations.
